8U Rec. coach pitch is for players new to the sport and for players that need to hone their skills at a more even skill level. 8U coach pitch is played on 60' bases and 38' pitching. We use a coach pitcher (not machine) who pitches to his team, while we field a pitcher player from the defensive team. The coach pitcher is instructed and expected to stay clear of any batted balls, so as not to cause any interference with a fielder's attempt to make a play. Players (batters) are given 6 pitches per at bat. Also, the batter is out if there are 3 strikes before the 6th pitch - missed swings, foul balls and foul tips are counted as strikes. However, a batter is not out on a foul ball. If the batter fouls off the 6th pitch they will be entitled to continue until they either put the ball in play, swing and miss, or takes another subsequent pitch. Additionally, there are no bunts, lead offs or steals. No metal cleats are permitted.
